Julia Krahn | Ja, ich Will!
" 'Ja, Ich Will!' is taking part of the 'MUTTER' project, a research focused on the ambiguity between spiritual needs and emotional uncertainties. By using her body as a symbolic representation of our social troubles, she creates images wherein doubts become beliefs and desires come to be faith.
Julia Krahn develops, since 1999, her private conflicts taking pictures of herself. Through self-staging, she pursues a research about missing and unbalanced values in society, family, religion, lately approaching the matter with Christian inspired images and icons.
From giant format exposed to the viewer to small amulets kept to oneself, our relationship with images changes, but not the understanding. That is the theme of the collaboration with Julia Krahn, giving birth to a photo installation and an edition inspired by holy cards.
The project is made of conflicts; exhibition and intimacy, challenge and introspection. Two big size photographs pasted up in the space react to a collection of small cards meant to be acquired.
Through this project in collaboration with Julia Krahn, Zirkumflex aims to stage a sensitive experience of photography by putting to the test our individual and shared relationship with images.
EDITION As a complement to the installation that takes place in the space, the edition 'Ja, Ich Will!' is made of a collection of nine small cards. Originally produced for the use of the faithful and passion, holy cards are a series of pictures about questioning social values and individual spirituality by using religious visual codes. They intend to engage a private relationship with their bearer, as the picture of a loved one kept in a wallet. The reverse contains some words written by the artist.
EXHIBITION On the contrary, the installation's purpose is about flaunting. The visitor is brought face to face with a doubtful situation between two large images put up on opposite walls. The artist confronts herself to her own weakness and strength in love. 'Ja, Ich Will!' (Yes, I want!).
The displaying of the holy cards in an intimate sanctuary displayed to the view of passers-by in the street completes the exhibition."
