Wade Guyton

"Gisela Capitain and Friedrich Petzel are delighted to announce the first solo exhibition by Wade Guyton at Capitain Petzel in Berlin.

The artist has chosen to exhibit an installation of fifteen large, glass-topped vitrines, in which he displays a group of eighty-six works on paper, pages from magazines and books which Guyton had accumulated and modified. The works lie on a background of deep blue vinyl floor tiles, which are laid edge to edge in the base of the vitrines. Some vitrines remain empty of works, showing only the expanse of blue.

Guyton started this body of work by running these already-printed pages through an Epson C88 inkjet printer. The marks are drawn in Microsoft Word and printed over pages torn from books and magazines to create what the artist refers to as ‘drawings’.In some cases, in selecting the wrong window the homepages from http://www.apple.com/ or http://www.nytimes.com/ were also inadvertently printed He then proceeded to photograph piles of these drawings on the floor of the kitchen at his studio, which is paved with blue vinyl tiles.

For his exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne in 2010, Guyton decided to show some of these ‘printer drawings’ in four, pre-existing vitrines owned by the museum, to accompany the large-scale painting which he was exhibiting. He covered the base of the display cases with the same blue tiles he had in his studio kitchen. To accompany the exhibition, the museum published a book of the collected photographs which he had taken back in New York. Zeichnungen fur eine grosses bild

The exhibition at Capitain Petzel is a continuation of the vitrines display in Cologne and Guyton has expanded the work to create a major installation. The eighty-six works on paper become a group which now comes together as one work.

Wade Guyton has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, with solo shows at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle; Portikus, Frankfurt; MAMbo, Bologna, Haubrokshows, Berlin; West London Projects, London; Harvard University, Massachusetts; The Kunstverein, Hamburg and La Salle de Bains, Lyon."
