Alicja Kwade "79 Hours", 2024, from the series "721 Hours", 2024, brass clock hands on cardboard, pencil, framed, 29.5 x 23.5 x 3.5 cm, edition 9/20

Alicja Kwade explores the enigma of time in her series "721 hours". Using 721 clock hands – the number of hours in a month – she creates assemblages that question the measurability of life

Alicja Kwade is represented in major museums around the world with her subtly probing works and is one of the most successful artists of her generation. She questions the systems in which we live, often without us noticing them – such as time itself.

Her series for Monopol engages with the concept of timekeeping. "721 hours", the title of the overall series, comprises 20 framed assemblages featuring varying numbers of clock hands. Each hand represents one hour; the total number of hands across the series is 721 – precisely the number of hours in a month, counted from twelve o’clock to twelve o’clock.

The hands pose questions about the measurability of life, while pencil-written notations add an additional layer. Each unique work in the series is priced at €3,000 including VAT.
