With its monumental columns and the word "Germania" emblazoned above the entrance, the German Pavilion and its Nazi history have long presented a challenge to generations of artists at the Venice Biennale. This year’s exhibition confronts the past from a fresh angle, foregrounding an explicitly East German perspective for the first time in the pavilion’s history.
