Nora Turato works with language – fast, intense and full of ruptures. For Monopol and the Zurich-based Edition VFO, she has created three screen prints on Plexiglas that explore the heart as a symbol that is at once empty and emotionally charged

Nora Turato works with language, and she does so relentlessly. Early in her rapid rise, the artist, who was born in Croatia in 1991, captivated audiences with her eloquent and highly charged performances. She studied art in Amsterdam, where she still lives today, and typography in Arnhem. The graphic quality of her text-based works is as sophisticated as it is original. Turato plays with signs and symbols at high speed, always introducing an unexpected twist.

She creates large-scale wall works, most recently for the Kunsthalle Wien and New York’s High Line, and has exhibited at major international institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Secession in Vienna and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The edition she created for the Zurich-based Edition VFO and Monopol likewise engages with the language and symbols we use.

"I asked myself: what is the emptiest symbol we have in the world today? It’s the shape of a heart," Turato explains. The text it carries opens up a world of speculation: "I could be, I could live, I could love." We live surrounded by predictions and future scenarios, she says, "but in the end, we know nothing for certain."

Turato plays with this uncertainty. She also plays with the seductive power of images that become fetishes, and with the rules that govern communication. "Language is like a virus. It spreads. Someone says something, it stays in your head, and it can completely change you. Language has so much power."

For this project, Nora Turato has created three screen prints on Plexiglas in different formats. Each of the three exclusive editions is issued in an edition of 30.
