ANYA JANSSEN
Cloud-Dwellers

––– English version below –––
„Cloud-Dwellers“ und „People Say I’m Different“ zu sehen.
“I’m a storyteller, a collector of souls and perhaps even a stalker. My projects start with a longterm and intimate relationship with my subject. I always work in series, two to five years on one project. […] I’m really fascinated by human beings: their emotions, thinking, behavior… I want to get under their skin. The people I paint always seem to be in transition or standing at a crossroad. It’s really mysterious, but I’m always led to an encounter ‘meant to be’.”
– Anya Janssen

Anya Janssen‘s portraits seem like intermediaries from another sphere. Accompanied by auras that arise from color spectra, the protagonists are surrounded by a veil of mystery that the painter discovers but does not reveal. The paintings and drawings give indications of what is intellectually not recognizable but can be felt. When she paints, Janssen is fully committed to her counterparts, they become parts of herself. The paintings are studies of the soul and psychograms that seem to be in constant movement and metamorphosis due to the virtuoso coloring. The rough realism of the characters against and with the surreal sensuality in their appearance creates a discrepancy through which the story ultimately develops out of the images.
“We were born in your world, but you will die in ours”, is one of the graffiti-quotes from Janssens’ collection (discovered on a wall in Berlin) that inspired the artist for the “Cloud-Dwellers” series. Like beings that have fallen out of the clouds, for Anya Janssen her portrayed stand for a hopeful future - for a confidence that can be found in the temporary and uncertain nature of all of our existence. Shown in partly dystopian scenarios, they are not afraid of fragmented worldviews and opposing opinions. They pose boldly and with modest bravery, an unnatural light falls on their young bodies. Dreamy and unreal, strong and fragile at the same time, they carry with them a subtle, soft kind of force with which they seem to be able to change the world around them.
