Harding Meyer | PRESENCE
....Seit vielen Jahren malt Harding Meyer Gesichter. Die Arbeit an der Leinwand ist dabei nur ein Teil des Schaffensprozesses. Zunächst sucht der Künstler nach Vorlagen, er durchforstet Zeitschriften, das Fernsehprogramm und vor allem das Internet. Das Bauchgefühl entscheide, sagt er, es gehe bei der Auswahl nicht um Sympathie oder die Schönheit eines Gesichts. Er sei auch nicht an Zusammenhängen interessiert, deshalb befreie er jedes Foto aus seiner sinnstiftenden Umgebung. Seine Gemälde bleiben stets unbetitelt.....
Selbst schöne Menschen sind bei Meyer nie nur attraktiv, der Blick des Betrachters gleitet nicht über die Oberfläche eines Gesichts – im Gegenteil. Diese Bilder haben „grip“, man bleibt an ihnen hängen, verfängt sich im Schleier, der auf den Ansichten zu liegen scheint. Man möchte mit den Personen nicht flirten, lieber würde man sie fragen: Was hast du? Über die Augen gelange man in das Innere eines Menschen, heißt es, auf diesen Reflex im Betrachter setzt auch Meyer. So stößt man zum philosophischen Kern vor, es geht hier um das Bild des Menschen in der Gegenwart, um eine Zustandsbeschreibung des Humanen.
Wer Meyers Bilder länger betrachtet, wird spüren, dass etwas Unheimliches von ihnen ausgeht. Das ist keine dekorative Kunst. Meyer ist ein Fischer, er zieht seine Vorlagen mit dem Käscher aus dem digitalen Datenstrom. Diese Gesichter haben indes nichts Ursprüngliches, sie sind nicht natürlich, denn sie wurden bereits in Studios und Schneideräumen bearbeitet oder per Photoshop in Form gebracht. Indem Meyer auf die Leinwand bringt, was er zuvor der Bilderflut entrissen hat, manipuliert er die Vorlage seinerseits, er verfremdet sie weiter. Und er thematisiert den Akt des Malens durch unnatürliches Kolorit, Verwischungen, Unschärfen und Spachtelspuren ausdrücklich; die Rückführung vom neuen ins alte Medium. Er versucht gleichzeitig, des betreffenden Gesichts habhaft zu werden, es der Vergänglichkeit zu entreißen, vor dem Schicksal des Verschwimmens im weißen Rauschen zu bewahren. Meyer birgt, er hebt auf.
Die Unruhe, die den Betrachter befällt, ergibt sich aus dem Bruch mit der Gewohnheit, den Meyer wagt. Alle unsere Strategien, uns der porträtierten Person zu nähern, lässt er scheitern. Wir können uns mit ihr nicht identifizieren, wir rühren nicht an ihre Individualität, wir wissen nicht, ob sie sich nach etwas sehnt, ob sie hofft oder sich fürchtet, ob sie erschrickt oder begehrt. Alles Erkennen ist Wiedererkennen, sagt Platon, also suchen wir verzweifelt unsere Erinnerung nach diesen Antlitzen ab. Allein sie beginnen zu flackern, wenn man sich ihnen nähert, sie sind nicht zu fassen. Diese Bilder zeigen gefrorene Momente von anderswo, sie haben ihre eigene Wirklichkeit. Wir ahnen indes, dass sie über die unsrige einigen Aufschluss geben könnte. Denn das steht außer Zweifel: Meyers Gesichter gehören Zeitgenossen. Zusammengenommen ergeben sie ein Album mit Ansichten der Gegenwart, ein Facebook in Öl.

Harding Meyer has been painting faces for the past 15 years. Working on canvas is only part of the artist's creative process. At first, he looks for models and browses through magazines, TV programmes, and the web, in particular. It is the gut feeling that decides, he says, he does not choose a photo out of sympathy or because it shows a beautiful face. Nor is he interested in the background story, and so he removes each photo from its original context. All his paintings are untitled….
In Meyer's works, even beautiful people are never simply attractive. The viewer's eyes do not glide along the surface of the face - on the contrary. These paintings have a grip on you, you get caught, and you entangle yourself in the veil that seems to cover these pictures. You do not want to flirt with these persons; you rather want to ask them: What is the matter with you? Through a person's eyes you can look into his inner self, as they say, and Meyer counts on this reflex. Thus you can advance to what is the philosophical core; it is all about the image of the human being in the present times, a state description of human nature.
When looking at Meyer's paintings for a longer time you get the impression that something eerie emanates from them. They are not a piece of decorative art. Meyer is a fisherman who catches his models with a scoop net from the digital data stream. These faces, however, do not have anything original. They are not natural, because they already were edited in studios and cutting rooms or edited in Photoshop. By showing on canvas what he has wrested from a stream of images, Meyer on his part manipulates the original and distorts it further. And he emphasises the act of painting through unnatural colours, blurring, softness of focus and scraper marks - turning the new medium back into the old one. At the same time, he tries to get hold of the face to wrest it away from transience, to save it from the fate of blurring away into white noise. Meyer rescues, he preserves.
The unease that besets the viewer is due to the fact that Meyer dares to break with old habits. Our usual strategies to approach the depicted persons are bound to fail. We cannot identify with them, we cannot touch their individuality, and we do not know whether they are yearning for something, whether they are hopeful or afraid, whether they are scared or whether they are craving something. Knowledge is recognition, as Plato says, and hence we are desperately searching through our memories for those faces. Yet, they begin to flicker when we move towards them, they are elusive. These pictures show frozen moments from elsewhere, they have their own reality. However, we sense that they can shed some light on our reality. Because one thing is for sure: Meyer's faces belong to our contemporaries. Taken together, they are an album with pictures of the present, a Face book in oil.
