Michelle Grabner
Opening on Thursday, 7 July 2022, 6 p.m.
Exhibition 8 July — 15 September 2022
The artistic work of Michelle Grabner (*1962 Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA) is inextricably interwoven with her biography, as her ongoing exploration of processes within her painting and sculpture practice is equally reflected in her academic career as a professor, writer, and critic. She is currently Senior Chair of the Department of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she has been a professor since 1997. Of her regular curatorial projects, most notable are the 2014 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art and her 2018 artistic directorship of FRONT International. In 2021, she was awarded the prestigious Fine Arts Guggenheim Fellowship.
Her solo show Margarine (8.7.–15.9.2022) is an exhibition that considers replication and the routine. It features three new bodies of work: a collection of domestic pattern paintings, a new single-channel video installation that balances ordered domestic space with land- scape, and a large-scale collage series composed from the printed motifs embellishing manufactured paper products. Deploying commonplace material, Grabner continues her investigations into redistributing and replicating the unremarkable and the unoriginal into abstract arrangements that demand scrutiny and interpretation.
