In Matthias Lutzeyer’s works, colour itself is the sculpted material; colour is the artistic form. It is thus used in both senses. In German, it refers on the one hand to a visual quality, and on the other to a tangible material. Matthias Lutzeyer creates his works from a mixture of soot black (pigment) and linseed oil, which he kneads and shapes into forms on the wall or on the floor. Their coarse, rough surface resembles solidified lava; the anthracite hue of the mass takes on numerous shades when light falls upon it. The works evoke thoughts of primal power or seething danger beneath the hard surface.
The large black cube is abstract on the one hand, yet also offers numerous opportunities to explore subtle colours and forms, to experience its tactile qualities, and to engage in association and interpretation – as with all his works.
