Naqsh Raj (b. 1984) is an artist and educator based in Islamabad. She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Art from the National College of Arts in Lahore and has over a decade’s experience teaching art and design in Pakistan, as well as several years of teaching in the United Kingdom.
Her paintings are characterised by a highly distinctive style marked by tension. Flowing, organic brushstrokes collide with mechanical, methodical applications of paint. The layers of pigment merge into one another. The grid layer becomes a framework of order. The free-form shapes stand as fragments of everyday life and personal memories. The varied ‘strokes of colour’, applied using stencils, reveal an instinctive aesthetic and way of life.
