The Heart of the Matter ist die erste umfassende Retrospektive der US-amerikanischen Künstlerin Carrie Mae Weems in Berlin. Mit mehr als 100 Fotografien und Videos aus über vier Jahrzehnten eröffnet die Ausstellung einen tiefen Einblick in ein Werk, das persönliche Erfahrungen mit gesellschaftlichen und historischen Fragestellungen verbindet und den Blick auf Geschichten, Menschen und Orte richtet, die in historischen Erzählungen häufig ausgeblendet werden.
Parallel dazu führt die Doppelausstellung der beiden Gewinner:innen des After Nature Prize 26: Stelios Kallinikou . Cliffs Among Dreams und Susanne Kriemann . Im Fieber der Sonne flattern Schmetterlinge im Bauch an Orte, an denen Vergangenes in der Gegenwart fortwirkt: in militärisch kontrollierte Gebiete, kontaminierte Landschaften und in die Erde selbst. Die Arbeiten machen Zustände erfahrbar, die sinnlich nicht unmittelbar zugänglich sind, und fragen nach der Rolle des fotografischen Bildes, wenn sich das, was gezeigt werden soll, der Sichtbarkeit entzieht.
Ergänzt wird das Programm durch die elfte Artistic Intervention 2026 der international renommierten Künstlerin Ayşe Erkmen im Café C/O Berlin x Bark Berlin.

The Heart of the Matter is the first comprehensive retrospective of US-American artist Carrie Mae Weems in Berlin. Featuring more than one hundred photographs and videos spanning more than four decades, the exhibition offers an in-depth insight into a body of work that combines personal experiences with social and historical issues and focuses on stories, people, and places that are often overlooked in historical narratives.
Running parallel to this is the double exhibition featuring the two winners of the After Nature Prize 26: Stelios Kallinikou . Cliffs Among Dreams, and Susanne Kriemann . Im Fieber der Sonne flattern Schmetterlinge im Bauch. The works take viewers to places where the past persists into the present day: to regions under military control, contaminated landscapes, and into the very soil. These artists make palpable those conditions that cannot be apprehended with the senses, exploring how the photographic image might operate when what needs to be shown is invisible to the eye.
The program is complemented by the eleventh Artistic Intervention 2026 by the internationally renowned artist Ayşe Erkmen at Café C/O Berlin x Bark Berlin.
