Kaum einer hat die Schrecken des Ersten Weltkriegs so schonungslos und erschütternd in Bilder gebannt wie Otto Dix. Bilder, die in ihrer Dringlichkeit nahe an uns heranrücken und bis in die Gegenwart reichen.
Seit 1993 reiste sein Werkzyklus Der Krieg in einer vom ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen organisierten Tourneeausstellung um die Welt. Die ifa-Galerie Stuttgart bringt ihn nun in Dialog mit zeitgenössischen Positionen aus der ifa-Kunstsammlung: Sechs Künstler:innen, die mit Video und Performance arbeiten, wählen für die Ausstellung Was in Wirklichkeit ist Radierungen aus dem Zyklus und stellen ihnen eigene Werke gegenüber. Der Krieg ist zugleich Zeugnis und Mahnmal und geht unmittelbar aus Dix’ Erfahrungen als Soldat hervor. Die eingeladenen Künstler:innen erschließen neue Dimensionen seines Werkes und stellen Verbindungen zu Themen wie Trauma, kollektives Gedächtnis, Gewalt, Verdrängung, Körper, Landschaft, Ideologie und Absurdität her. Die Ausstellung ist Teil der ifa-Programmreihe Out of the Box.

Otto Dix stands alone among artists for his uncompromisingly direct and brutal depictions of the horrors of the First World War. His pictures have an urgency that impacts on us to this day.
Since 1993, Dix’s cycle of works entitled The War has been touring the world in an exhibition organised by ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, and now ifa Gallery Stuttgart is showing works from this exhibition in dialogue with contemporary works from the ifa art collection. For What Really Is, six artists working in video and performance have selected etchings from Dix’s cycle and present these in combination with works of their own. The War is a work of witness and remembrance that draws directly on Dix’s own experiences as a soldier. The invited artists explore new dimensions of Dix’s work, with connections to themes such as trauma, collective memory, violence, repression, the body, landscape, ideology, and absurdity. This exhibition is part of ifa’s Out of the Box series.
