Ein Spaziergang am Wasser entlang macht immer Spaß – im von Sir Norman Foster entworfenen Duisburger Innenhafen ist er sogar ein Erlebnis. In der perfekt hergerichteten Industriekulturarchitektur findet sich zudem sehr vielfältige Gastronomie. Perfekte Entschleunigung bietet danach das Museum Küppersmühle (3) mit seiner fantastischen Sammlung, wobei das Museum auch noch das beste Restaurant des Standorts beherbergt. Auf dessen Freisitz wird nicht zu Unrecht Sylt-Atmo versprochen. Am Wasser entlang verlässt der Flaneur den Hafen und gelangt in den Garten der Erinnerung (4), Duisburgern auch als Altstadtpark bekannt, ein von Dani Karavan 1999 gestalteter Erlebnisraum, wo auch die Skater ihre Tricks üben können. Schnell kommt man vom Wasser wieder in die City, etwa durch Pulverweg oder Moselstraße, wo vor dem Theater Duisburg (7) am Rhein unmittelbar Bernar Venets "5 Arcs x 5" die Blicke auf sich zieht. Nebenan in der Spielbank kann man zocken und exklusiv essen, davor bevölkern sommers junge Leute lässig die Grünfläche.

There's not much that is more enjoyable than a walk along the waterfront — and in the case of the Duisburg inner harbor designed by Sir Norman Foster it is certainly a real experience. Perfectly modernized industrial architecture meets quality restaurants. The Museum Küppersmühle (3) is the perfect place to unwind, with its marvelous collections, and the museum also boasts the best restaurant near and far. Sitting outside you could be forgiven for thinking you were at the beach. Follow the water's edge away from the harbor and enter the Garten der Erinnerung (4), which many an old local will know as Altstadtpark: here, in 1999, Dani Karavan designed a themed space where skaters can also perform their tricks. The waterside leads you straight back into town, along Pulverweg or Moselstrasse, where Bernar Venet's "5 Arcs x 5" catches the eye, placed directly front of the Theater Duisburg (7) at the Rhein. You can gamble at the casino next door and dine exclusively afterwards, and in the summer young people bask in the rays on the lawns.

Frisch renoviert präsentiert sich das Lehmbruck Museum (8) im Immanuel-Kant-Park. Hier begegnet man skulpturaler Kunst auf Schritt und Tritt – wie auch dem prallen urbanen Leben. Richtet man seinen Schritt nicht in Richtung der Innenstadt, sondern schlägt sich durch den Park in Richtung Osten, so kommt man zum Museum DKM (9).

The Lehmbruck Museum (8) in Immanuel-Kant-Park has just been modernized. Here, sculptural art awaits you everywhere—in the midst of vibrant urban life. If you don’t head downtown but instead cut across the park to the east then you’ll reach the Museum DKM (9).

Gekonnt wurde hier ein reiner Zweckbau 2009 in einen beeindruckenden Kunstort mit 2700 Quadratmetern verwandelt. Das grafische Werk von Blinky Palermo ist hier daheim, überhaupt sind zahlreiche Künstler mit Überblickssammlungen vertreten. Zurück durch den Park und weiter ins Dellviertel (5): In dessen Zentrum liegt der Dellplatz. Rundherum hat sich eine Reihe gastronomischer Projekte angesiedelt, ein studentisch-bohemistisches Milieumacht es sich hier gemütlich. Direkt am Platz logiert etwa das älteste kommunale Kino Deutschlands, das Filmforum. Das Programm ist arty, das Café Movies im Hause hat einen guten Burger. Nebenan im Grammatikoff ist dafür Szene angesagt. Das schönste und netteste Café des Viertels ist nur Minuten entfernt: Im Mimi e Rosa lässt sich trefflich Zeit verschwenden.

Here, a utility building was skillfully converted in 2009 into an impressive art venue, with 2,700 square meters of space. It is home to Blinky Palermo's prints, and there are collections giving an overview of the works of numerous artists. Back through the park and onward to the Dellviertel (5) district , at the heart of which is Dellplatz. A number of hospitality projects has popped up around here, and the student and bohemian worlds are very much at ease in them. Germany's oldest municipal cinema — the Filmforum — is located directly on Dellplatz. It shows arthouse films, and Café Movies in the building serves a mean burger. Next door is Grammatikoff, the place to be. And the most beautiful and nicest café in the district is only a few minutes away: Just sit and let your mind wander at the Mimi e Rosa.

Die Innenstadt von Moers gilt als eine der heimeligsten des Ruhrgebiets. Nett shoppen kann man hier, schlendern, schauen, Kaffee trinken. Die Kunst ist beheimatet in der ehemaligen Städtischen Galerie unweit des Neumarktes. Ein privatbürgerlicher Verein betreibt seit 2015 das Peschkenhaus, das älteste Bürgerhaus der Stadt (aus dem 15. Jahrhundert), als Ausstellungsort für zeitgenössische Kunst und Begegnungsstätte. Das interessiert Architekturfans: Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde es als kleines Stadtpalais umgebaut und um 1800 klassizistisch verputzt. Wer genug in der Altstadt geschlendert ist, kann sich vorbei am Schloss, wo das bekannte Schlosstheater (13) seine Heimat hat, und dem historischen Museum direkt in den fabelhaften Schlosspark begeben. Wer den Park durchwandert, trifft schließlich auf den Moerser Freizeitpark, lange Zeit Heimat des weltberühmten Moerser Jazz-Festivals, das seit einigen Jahren stets auf der finanziellen Kippe steht. Als "moers festival" wird es 2017 aber wieder hier
stattfinden.

Downtown Moers has long been considered one of the most homely places in the Ruhr region. You can enjoy shopping, wandering, window-shopping, or sipping a cup of coffee. The art is to be found in the former Städtische Galerie not far from Neumarkt. Since 2015, a private civic association has been operating Peschkenhaus (dating from the 15th century, it is the oldest townhouse in Moers) as an exhibition venue for contemporary art and a meeting place. And there's something for architecture fans, too: In the 18th century, a small town palace was converted and given a Classicist rendering in 1800. Anyone who has had enough walking round the old town can take the route past the castle with the Schlosstheater (13) (along with the historical museum) and head straight for the castle's fabulous park. Walk right through it and at the other side you get to Moers' recreation park, for many years the home of the world-famous Moers Jazz Festival. Its finances have been very wobbly these last few years, but in 2017 it will take place here again—as the "moers festival."

Bei den Oberhausener Kurzfilmtagen ist die Innenstadt von Oberhausen Treffpunkt kreativer Köpfe aus aller Welt, die dann die Kneipen und Cafés bevölkern. Ein spannender Spaziergang durch eine Gemengelage von Historie, Industrie und Kultur verbindet die Ludwig Galerie Schloss Oberhausen (16) (oft mit Popkultur-Ausstellungen) mit dem weithin eindrucksvollen Gasometer (17), in dem zum Beispiel Christos Fässerwand "The Wall" oder sein "Big Air Package" Raum fanden. Zurück geht es am Schloss vorbei in Richtung Kaisergarten, wo der Rhein-Herne-Kanal unbedingt auf der von Tobias Rehberger entworfenen Brücke "Slinky Springs to Fame" (15) überquert werden sollte. Dann geht es zurück in die Innenstadt, wo sich der Abend trefflich im Ensemble aus Theater (19) nebst Theaterkneipe Falstaff und dem benachbarten Ebertbad (18) verbringen lässt – falls man nicht den Verlockungen des gigantischen Einkaufszentrums CentrO erliegt.

During the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, the city becomes the meeting point for creative minds from all over the world who fittingly love to lounge around in the completely ordinary bars and cafés. An exciting walk through a mixture of history, industry and culture is offered, for example, if you wander from the Ludwig Galerie Schloss Oberhausen (16) (it often hosts exhibitions of Pop culture) to the Gasometer (17) — so impressive from afar — which has hosted among other things Christo's tower of barrels "The Wall" and his "Big Air Package." Walk back, past the castle in the direction of Kaisergarten, where you simply must cross the Rhine-Herne canal using the footbridge Tobias Rehberger designed, the "Slinky Springs to Fame" (15). Then you should head back to town, where the evening can easily be spent in the ensemble of the Theater (19) and the Falstaff theater bar, and the neighboring Ebertbad (18), if you don’t succumb to the temptations of the gigantic CentrO mall.

Mitten im Stadtraum von Bottrop gibt es plötzlich dieses erlebenswerte Ensemble aus hochintelligenter Architektur und künstlerisch gestaltetem Landschaftsraum. Das Josef Albers Museum Quadrat (21) verfügt über eine großartige Sammlung der Werke des Bauhaus-Malers Josef Albers, der 1888 in Bottrop geboren wurde. Ein Spaziergang durch den im englischen Stil angelegten Park lohnt sich auch visuell. Da ist etwa die Großplastik "Einheit aus drei gleichen Volumen" von Max Bill zu entdecken. Bill, der seine Schau im Quadrat als seine schönste empfand, konnte dazu bewegt werden, dieses Werk eigens für das Quadrat in poliertem Stahl statt in Granit auszuführen und sie im Park aufzustellen. Auch das "Bottrop-Piece" von Donald Judd aus dem Jahr 1977 oder die "Hommage an Josef Albers" von Erwin Heerich von 1997 sind im hochkarätigen Skulpturenpark zu sehen. Wem der Sinn danach steht, das Dasein, die Kunst und all das etwas historisch zu relativieren, dem gelingt das sicher im Museum für Ur- und Ortsgeschichte. Ein montiertes Mammutskelett bildet den Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung in der Eiszeithalle. Steinkohlenwald und Eiszeit-Kältesteppe lassen 350 Millionen Jahre Erdgeschichte nacherleben. Weitere Naturerlebnisse finden sich in Fahrradreichweite: Die Halde Haniel und der danebenliegende herrlich zu bewandernde Köllnische Wald zeugen vom fast schon sprichwörtlichen "grünen Ruhrgebiet".

In the middle of the urban space of downtown Bottrop you suddenly come across a compelling ensemble of highly intelligent architecture and artistically designed green space. The Josef Albers Museum Quadrat (21) is home to a fantastic collection of Das Moerser Schloss. the works of Bauhaus painter Josef Albers, who was born in Bottrop in 1888. A walk through the park, fashioned after an English landscaped garden, is also a visual treat: The large sculpture "Einheit aus drei gleichen Volumen" by Max Bill is only one of the gems to be found here. The museum convinced Bill, who saw his exhibition at the Quadrat as the high point of his career, to create the piece in polished steel rather than granite as a special commission to be placed in the park. The outstanding sculpture park also features Donald Judd's "Bottrop Piece" from the year 1977, as well as Erwin Heerich's "Homage to Josef Albers" created in 1997. Those who feel like putting life, art, and the everyday world into a historical perspective will enjoy a trip to the Museum für Urund Ortsgeschichte. A fully assembled mammoth skeleton here forms the center of the exhibition in the Ice Age Hall. A Carboniferous forest and Ice Age tundra allow visitors to relive 350 million years of natural history. Additional nature adventures are also easy to reach by bike: The Halde Haniel, a former slag heap, and the Köllnische Wald forest next to it, are wonderful areas for hiking, proving that the now almost proverbial "green Ruhr Valley" really does have a lot to offer.
