Katherine Bradford, Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas Collect My Work, 2022; Courtesy the artist and Haverkampf Leistenschneider, Berlin; Photo: Jens Ziehe
The paintings of Katherine Bradford (b. 1942, New York) are luminous, lush compositions with figures that appear to be neither female nor male nor both. Superheroes and superheroines, swimmers, couples or individual beings float in space and do not fully materialize. Luminous and dreamlike, color field painting merges with figuration. One of the central works in the exhibition unusually shows a historical person - Gertrude Stein together with her partner Alice B. Toklas - and is at the same time the inspiration for the new paintings presented in the exhibition.
