Wentrup is thrilled to present Nevin Aladag's sixth solo exhibition at the 20th edition of Gallery Weekend Berlin. Under the title "Vibrating Images", the artist presents her latest series of the same name, which already provides an indication of the nature of the works - they are vibrating pictures that create a hybrid of painting, sculpture, and musical instrument. Guitar or harp strings, drums, or chimes are embedded in rectangular wooden bodies on which the artist paints organic color fields. The Vibrating Images follow the tradition of Aladag's well-known Resonator and Music Roomseries and can be seen as a continuation of these. While these earlier works had more of a sculptural character, she understands the new pieces as paintings and reliefs in which musical instruments from various genres are brought together. By activating the instruments, the works begin to vibrate and, in this way, create their very own language. But even in their silent form, the works already emit a feeling that is close to a pulse or a reverberation by the arrangement of the strings, and their placement across the amorphous color fields.
During the Gallery Weekend, the Vibrating Images will be brought to life with a performance in which musicians interact with the instruments.
Nevin Aladag lives and works in Berlin. Her internationally renowned oeuvre has received numerous awards and has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, the Hayward Gallery in London, the SFMOMA in San Francisco, and most recently, the Max-Ernst Museum in Brühl. Aladag has taken part in numerous biennials such as the 57th Venice Biennale and 11th Istanbul Biennial or documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens.
