November 9 marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The commemorative exhibition carries the title "Querschläger", a term that literally means "ricochet". It serves as a reminder that live ammunition was used at the Wall, with often deadly results. In view of the current global political situation, with new walls being put up and, stoked by populist movements, new divisions and conflicts between neighboring countries developing or being reignited, the fall of the Berlin Wall can serve as a poignant reminder that it is both necessary and possible to overcome these divisions in our minds as well as in concrete political fact.
