Tina Hage – The one that couldn't get away

________________________________
‘I am interested in developing meaningful images, in which I perform a role reversal and put myself into the re-staged events’, says Tina Hage about her photographic re-enactments.
This describes her laborious and complex working process in her studio during which the artist re-stages scenes that are based on found photojournalistic images and art historical motifs. Seemingly relentlessly she slips into multiple roles, experimenting with wigs and costumes, before photographing herself in different postures. From the resulting pictures, sometimes more than a thousand, she then re-composes digital collages on her computer.
Hage’s artistic practice is influenced by art movements from the 1980s and 90s such as Appropriation Art and Conceptual Photography. Similar to the most significant representatives of these movements – Cindy Sherman, Thomas Demand or Jeff Wall - Hage questions the originality and authenticity of media imagery. By re-appropriating existing pictures, her work opens up new viewpoints.
Tina Hage’s artistic strategy to take the position of an observer in her images and to – at least on a conceptual level – put herself into multiple roles – invites the viewer to develop new viewpoints towards medially conveyed imagery.
