A group exhibition curated by Michelle Grabner considers the distribution of free spaces inherent in the material composed of textiles and paper fiber. The regimented voids between the warp and weft or the miniscule space between the interlocking fibers forming paper creates degrees of porousness. In a cultural moment where textiles are firmly embedded into the discourses of labor, touch and empathy, this group exhibition representing varied conceptual approaches to the effects of fiber-based work asks the viewer to consider the implications of textile’s free spaces: the unfilled voids that allow textiles to rove, fold, fluctuate, dangle and flap. Textiles inherent nature to abilities to embrace gaps and to frame voids.
